S\u00f3lo una mina de Bolivia es una mina primaria de bismuto; en otros pa\u00edses, el bismuto es un subproducto de la extracci\u00f3n de otros metales. El bismuto es un metal de precio moderado, que cuesta m\u00e1s que el cobre, el plomo y el zinc, pero mucho menos que el oro o la plata. Adem\u00e1s, una parte importante de la producci\u00f3n mundial de bismuto procede de las peque\u00f1as cantidades de bismuto en minerales de otros metales, que se recupera en B\u00e9lgica y Jap\u00f3n de minerales extranjeros que se env\u00edan a esos pa\u00edses para su fundici\u00f3n. Estados Unidos produce peque\u00f1as cantidades de bismuto a trav\u00e9s del reciclaje. Casi ninguno de los usos es para el bismuto met\u00e1lico puro. La mayor parte se consume en aleaciones de bismuto y en productos farmac\u00e9uticos y qu\u00edmicos. El resto se utiliza en cer\u00e1micas, pinturas, catalizadores y otras aplicaciones menores.<\/p>\n<p>Las aleaciones de bismuto son \u00fatiles por muchas razones:<\/p>\n<p>El bismuto y muchas de sus aleaciones se expanden ligeramente cuando se solidifican (congelan). Esto permite que el bismuto llene todas las esquinas de un molde para formar una r\u00e9plica perfectamente n\u00edtida del molde o del art\u00edculo que se est\u00e1 replicando. Tambi\u00e9n es una propiedad muy apreciada cuando se utiliza en soldadura o fontaner\u00eda (uni\u00f3n de tuber\u00edas).<\/p>\n<p>Muchas aleaciones de bismuto tienen un punto de fusi\u00f3n bajo, a veces incluso por debajo de la temperatura del agua hirviendo. As\u00ed, una pieza fundida de aleaci\u00f3n de bismuto puede recubrirse de pl\u00e1stico u otro material para formar una intrincada pieza de m\u00e1quina. A continuaci\u00f3n, el n\u00facleo de aleaci\u00f3n de bismuto se extrae simplemente fundi\u00e9ndolo en agua caliente y verti\u00e9ndolo. El uso de aleaciones de bismuto de baja fusi\u00f3n est\u00e1 muy extendido en los sistemas de rociadores de los edificios. Cuando la aleaci\u00f3n se funde en el aire calentado por el fuego, el rociador se desconecta y el agua roc\u00eda el incendio. Esta aplicaci\u00f3n representa m\u00e1s de un tercio del bismuto utilizado cada a\u00f1o en Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>El bismuto met\u00e1lico es relativamente inerte y no t\u00f3xico. Ha sustituido al t\u00f3xico plomo en muchas aplicaciones como fontaner\u00eda, balas, perdigones, aleaciones met\u00e1licas, soldadura y otras aplicaciones.<\/p>\n<p>En cuarto lugar, muchas aleaciones de bismuto son relativamente blandas y maleables. Maleable significa que un metal puede martillearse para formar l\u00e1minas finas. El bismuto se alea con el hierro para crear lo que se conoce como \"hierros maleables\".<\/p>\n<p>Los compuestos de bismuto se utilizan en medicamentos para el malestar estomacal (de ah\u00ed el nombre comercial de Pepto-Bismol), el tratamiento de \u00falceras de est\u00f3mago, cremas calmantes y cosm\u00e9ticos.<\/p>\n<p>La industria utiliza el bismuto en otras muchas aplicaciones. El bismuto es un catalizador en la producci\u00f3n de fibras acr\u00edlicas.
