Los sedimentos son de grano fino, muy sil\u00edceos y est\u00e1n formados principalmente por s\u00edlice opalina amorfa con peque\u00f1as cantidades de residuos org\u00e1nicos, minerales secundarios y restos cl\u00e1sticos no diatom\u00e1ceos o cristalinos codepositados. Entre los sin\u00f3nimos utilizados actualmente se encuentran la tierra de diatomeas y el kieselghur. Otros t\u00e9rminos m\u00e1s anticuados y obsoletos son polvo de tr\u00edpoli, tripolita y tierra de infusorios.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-39146a2122df2293e\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-39146a2122df2293e uvc-6059\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-39146a2122df2293e h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Relaci\u00f3n con la miner\u00eda<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>En la mayor parte del mundo, el menor coste y la mayor recuperaci\u00f3n de las canteras a cielo abierto en comparaci\u00f3n con la miner\u00eda subterr\u00e1nea animan a los operadores a utilizar m\u00e9todos de miner\u00eda de superficie. Cuando la secuencia de diatomita es gruesa, se desarrollan bancos de 1,5 a 15 m de altura. Los bancos no s\u00f3lo facilitan la extracci\u00f3n del mineral y los residuos, sino que tambi\u00e9n permiten el acceso inmediato a muchas m\u00e1s capas y ofrecen la oportunidad de mezclar capas con caracter\u00edsticas diferentes. Algunas excepciones notables son las minas subterr\u00e1neas de Europa, Sudam\u00e9rica y Asia, y la operaci\u00f3n de dragado del lago Myvatn (Islandia).<\/p>\n<p>Antes de la extracci\u00f3n, los estratos de mineral se identifican cuidadosamente en los frentes de la cantera mediante programas de muestreo y evaluaci\u00f3n que determinan y confirman la idoneidad de cada estrato individual. Se utiliza para filtrar impurezas de todo tipo de productos, desde cerveza y vino hasta aceites y grasas. Del mismo modo, la diatomita se utiliza para filtrar las impurezas del agua para producir agua potable en los sistemas p\u00fablicos de abastecimiento de agua. En este caso, la diatomita elimina bacterias y protozoos.<\/p>\n<p>El uso m\u00e1s antiguo de la diatomita es como abrasivo muy suave y con este fin se ha utilizado en dent\u00edfricos y pulimentos para metales.<\/p>\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n se utiliza como relleno en papel, pintura, ladrillos, azulejos, cer\u00e1mica, pl\u00e1sticos, jabones, detergentes y otros productos. Un relleno es una sustancia que aumenta el volumen de un producto y\/o rellena un espacio.<\/p>\n<p>La diatomita tambi\u00e9n ha demostrado su valor como material aislante en mecanismos de alta temperatura, como hornos y calderas.
