El roce de una mano hace que un cristal de azufre se agriete porque su superficie se calienta m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que su interior. El azufre se funde a los 108 grados Celsius. Azufre significa \"piedra ardiente\" en referencia a su origen volc\u00e1nico y a su facilidad para arder. La mayor parte del azufre extra\u00eddo procede de c\u00fapulas salinas o yacimientos en capas. La mayor parte se produce como subproducto del refinado del petr\u00f3leo y del procesamiento del gas natural.<\/p>\n<p>La extracci\u00f3n de azufre utiliza tres t\u00e9cnicas diferentes: m\u00e9todos subterr\u00e1neos convencionales, m\u00e9todos convencionales a cielo abierto y el m\u00e9todo de extracci\u00f3n de Frasch (o fusi\u00f3n subterr\u00e1nea). En este proceso, se introduce agua caliente a presi\u00f3n en el yacimiento de azufre. El \u00e1cido sulf\u00farico tiene m\u00faltiples usos en la producci\u00f3n de productos qu\u00edmicos, derivados del petr\u00f3leo y una amplia gama de otras aplicaciones industriales. El principal uso del azufre es la fabricaci\u00f3n de productos qu\u00edmicos para la agricultura, sobre todo para fertilizantes. Otros usos del azufre son el refinado del petr\u00f3leo, la miner\u00eda met\u00e1lica y la producci\u00f3n de productos qu\u00edmicos org\u00e1nicos e inorg\u00e1nicos.
