Un n\u00famero muy reducido de granates son lo suficientemente puros e impecables como para tallarlos como piedras preciosas. La mayor parte del granate se extrae para fabricar abrasivos. El granate pertenece al grupo de los minerales silicatados, es decir, su compleja f\u00f3rmula qu\u00edmica incluye la mol\u00e9cula de silicato (SiO4). En los yacimientos de roca dura, como la mina Barton del norte de Nueva York, se emplean m\u00e9todos a cielo abierto desde hace d\u00e9cadas. En China, la miner\u00eda de roca dura puede consistir en m\u00e9todos m\u00e1s primitivos, incluida la extracci\u00f3n manual.<\/p>\n<p>El granate se extrae y procesa m\u00e1s f\u00e1cilmente de los dep\u00f3sitos aluviales. Por ejemplo, en la mina de Emerald Creek, en Idaho, el granate se extrae de las gravas de los arroyos a partir de ranuras cortadas por retroexcavadoras o peque\u00f1as dragalinas. Tras la trituraci\u00f3n (que depende de la naturaleza del yacimiento o del mercado), los minerales se lavan para separar el material por gravedad espec\u00edfica. La mayor\u00eda de los operadores emplean clasificadores en espiral tradicionales para este paso, algunos junto con hidrosificadores. Al menos una empresa utiliza m\u00e9todos de flotaci\u00f3n para separar el granate de las fracciones pesadas no magn\u00e9ticas. Los concentrados se secan y se clasifican mediante separadores magn\u00e9ticos de alta intensidad y separadores electrost\u00e1ticos.<\/p>\n<p>Un productor que comercializa calidades muy finas para los mercados de esmerilado y pulido de precisi\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n conf\u00eda en las t\u00e9cnicas de separaci\u00f3n por v\u00eda h\u00fameda para el control de calidad. La separaci\u00f3n final da como resultado un producto superior a 95% de minerales de granate, que suele contener menos de 0,5% de cuarzo en peso. El papel de lija de granate fue la aplicaci\u00f3n original de este mineral. Tambi\u00e9n se utiliza para fabricar una serie de productos similares, como bandas, discos y tiras de lija.
