Se extrae de minerales de petalita (LiAl(Si2O5)2, lepidolita K(Li,Al)3(Al,Si,Rb)4O10(F,OH)2, espodumeno LiAl(SiO3)2 y tambi\u00e9n de salmueras subterr\u00e1neas. La lepidolita y la espodumena son otros minerales comunes que contienen litio. Cantidades comerciales de estos tres minerales se encuentran en un yacimiento especial de roca \u00edgnea que los ge\u00f3logos denominan pegmatita. En las pegmatitas, el magma se enfr\u00eda tan lentamente que los cristales tienen tiempo de crecer mucho. Como la lepidolita es un tipo de mica, sus cristales crecen formando largas y finas l\u00e1minas.<\/p>\n<p>Los recursos de litio se detallan en los Res\u00famenes de Materias Primas Minerales del USGS.<\/p>\n<p>Extracci\u00f3n de litio:<\/p>\n<p>El litio suele recuperarse a partir de salmueras, o agua con una alta concentraci\u00f3n de carbonato de litio. Las salmueras subterr\u00e1neas atrapadas en la corteza terrestre son la principal fuente de carbonato de litio. La extracci\u00f3n de estas fuentes es menos costosa que la de rocas como el espodumeno, la petalita y otros minerales que contienen litio.<\/p>\n<p>La producci\u00f3n de salmuera de litio comienza bombeando primero la salmuera a estanques evaporativos. A lo largo de 12 a 18 meses, la concentraci\u00f3n de la salmuera aumenta hasta 6.000 ppm de Li por evaporaci\u00f3n solar. M\u00e1s de 50% del litio extra\u00eddo se utiliza en bater\u00edas.
