Puede martillearse para formar l\u00e1minas finas, lo que significa que es maleable. El n\u00edquel fue descubierto en 1751 por Axel Fredrik Cronstedt.<\/p>\n<p>El hierro, el cobalto y el n\u00edquel (n\u00fameros 26, 27 y 28 de la Tabla Peri\u00f3dica) son los tres \u00fanicos elementos conocidos que son ferromagn\u00e9ticos (el tipo de magnetismo m\u00e1s fuerte) por encima de la temperatura ambiente. De los tres, el n\u00edquel es el menos magn\u00e9tico. Cuando los tres metales ferromagn\u00e9ticos se alean entre s\u00ed en combinaci\u00f3n con algunos elementos adicionales, se crea un im\u00e1n inusualmente fuerte, llamado im\u00e1n de \u00e1lnico. Esta aleaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n conduce bastante bien el calor y la electricidad. Los imanes de \u00e1lnico son los \u00fanicos que tienen magnetismo \u00fatil cuando se calientan al rojo vivo.<\/p>\n<p>El n\u00edquel suele encontrarse en yacimientos later\u00edticos, que son dep\u00f3sitos en los que una fuerte meteorizaci\u00f3n lixivia la roca rica en n\u00edquel y concentra el n\u00edquel en la superficie de la tierra o cerca de ella. Los yacimientos de sulfuro de n\u00edquel proporcionan el resto. Tambi\u00e9n hay peque\u00f1as cantidades de n\u00edquel subproducto recuperado de minerales de cobre y paladio-platino en el oeste de Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>Cada a\u00f1o se recuperan m\u00e1s de 80.000 toneladas de n\u00edquel reciclando acero inoxidable y otras aleaciones de n\u00edquel y hierro. Esto representa aproximadamente 40% del n\u00edquel utilizado cada a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>Se calcula que hay unos 140 millones de toneladas de n\u00edquel disponibles en yacimientos identificados. Ochenta y cuatro millones de toneladas, o el 60% del n\u00edquel total disponible, se encuentra en yacimientos later\u00edticos. Un yacimiento later\u00edtico es aquel en el que la lluvia y las aguas superficiales han lixiviado rocas ricas en n\u00edquel y han concentrado el n\u00edquel en la superficie de la Tierra o cerca de ella. Los dep\u00f3sitos de sulfuro de n\u00edquel contienen el cuarenta por ciento restante (56 millones de toneladas).<\/p>\n<p>La demanda de n\u00edquel en Estados Unidos es muy superior a la que puede proporcionar el n\u00edquel reciclado, por lo que se importa n\u00edquel al pa\u00eds. El acero inoxidable tambi\u00e9n contiene algo de molibdeno, titanio y n\u00edquel, para aumentar su resistencia a la corrosi\u00f3n.
