Seule une mine en Bolivie est une mine de bismuth primaire ; dans les autres pays, le bismuth est un sous-produit de l'extraction d'autres m\u00e9taux. Le bismuth est un m\u00e9tal \u00e0 prix mod\u00e9r\u00e9, plus cher que le cuivre, le plomb et le zinc, mais beaucoup moins que l'or ou l'argent. En outre, une part importante de la production mondiale de bismuth provient des petites quantit\u00e9s de bismuth contenues dans les minerais d'autres m\u00e9taux, qui sont r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9es en Belgique et au Japon \u00e0 partir de minerais \u00e9trangers exp\u00e9di\u00e9s dans ces pays pour y \u00eatre fondus. Les \u00c9tats-Unis produisent de petites quantit\u00e9s de bismuth par recyclage. Presque aucune de ces utilisations ne concerne le bismuth m\u00e9tallique pur. La majeure partie est consomm\u00e9e dans les alliages de bismuth, ainsi que dans les produits pharmaceutiques et chimiques. Le reste est utilis\u00e9 dans les c\u00e9ramiques, les peintures, les catalyseurs et une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d'applications mineures.<\/p>\n<p>Les alliages de bismuth sont utiles pour de nombreuses raisons :<\/p>\n<p>Le bismuth et nombre de ses alliages se dilatent l\u00e9g\u00e8rement lorsqu'ils se solidifient (g\u00e8lent). Cela permet au bismuth de remplir tous les coins d'un moule pour former une r\u00e9plique parfaitement nette du moule ou de l'objet \u00e0 reproduire. C'est \u00e9galement une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 appr\u00e9ci\u00e9e lorsqu'il est utilis\u00e9 pour la soudure ou la plomberie (assemblage de tuyaux).<\/p>\n<p>De nombreux alliages de bismuth ont un point de fusion bas, parfois m\u00eame inf\u00e9rieur \u00e0 la temp\u00e9rature de l'eau bouillante. Une pi\u00e8ce moul\u00e9e en alliage de bismuth peut donc \u00eatre recouverte de plastique ou d'un autre mat\u00e9riau pour former une pi\u00e8ce de machine complexe. Le noyau en alliage de bismuth est ensuite retir\u00e9 en le faisant simplement fondre dans de l'eau chaude et en le versant. L'utilisation d'alliages de bismuth \u00e0 bas point de fusion est tr\u00e8s r\u00e9pandue dans les syst\u00e8mes d'arrosage des b\u00e2timents. Lorsque l'alliage fond dans l'air chauff\u00e9 par le feu, le sprinkleur est d\u00e9branch\u00e9 et l'eau pulv\u00e9rise le feu. Cette application repr\u00e9sente plus d'un tiers du bismuth utilis\u00e9 aux \u00c9tats-Unis chaque ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Le bismuth m\u00e9tal est relativement inerte et non toxique. Il a remplac\u00e9 le plomb toxique dans de nombreuses applications telles que la plomberie, les balles, les plombs, les alliages m\u00e9talliques, la soudure et d'autres applications.<\/p>\n<p>Quatri\u00e8mement, de nombreux alliages de bismuth sont relativement souples et mall\u00e9ables. Mall\u00e9able signifie qu'un m\u00e9tal peut \u00eatre martel\u00e9 en feuilles minces. Le bismuth est alli\u00e9 au fer pour cr\u00e9er ce que l'on appelle des \"fers mall\u00e9ables\".<\/p>\n<p>Les compos\u00e9s de bismuth sont utilis\u00e9s dans les m\u00e9dicaments contre les maux d'estomac (d'o\u00f9 le nom de marque Pepto-Bismol), dans le traitement des ulc\u00e8res d'estomac, dans les cr\u00e8mes apaisantes et dans les cosm\u00e9tiques.<\/p>\n<p>L'industrie utilise le bismuth dans une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d'autres applications. Le bismuth est un catalyseur dans la production de fibres acryliques.
