Le c\u00e9sium est l'un des trois m\u00e9taux (avec le gallium et le mercure) qui sont liquides \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante ou presque.<br \/>\nLe c\u00e9sium est un m\u00e9tal tr\u00e8s r\u00e9actif qui, m\u00e9lang\u00e9 \u00e0 de l'eau froide, produit une r\u00e9action explosive. Son point de fusion est si bas qu'il fond si on le tient dans la main. Cependant, en raison de sa r\u00e9activit\u00e9, il peut br\u00fbler gravement la peau et doit donc \u00eatre manipul\u00e9 avec beaucoup de pr\u00e9cautions.<br \/>\nSeuls quelques milliers de kilogrammes de c\u00e9sium sont utilis\u00e9s chaque ann\u00e9e. Un certain nombre de min\u00e9raux contiennent des quantit\u00e9s significatives de c\u00e9sium, notamment le mica, le b\u00e9ryl, le feldspath, la p\u00e9talite et la pollucite, qui est le min\u00e9ral \u00e0 partir duquel le c\u00e9sium est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement extrait.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-45986a5f07a6934d1\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-45986a5f07a6934d1 uvc-8773\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-45986a5f07a6934d1 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Relation avec l'exploitation mini\u00e8re<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>La plupart du c\u00e9sium est trait\u00e9 \u00e0 partir du min\u00e9ral pollucite, que l'on trouve dans les pegmatites. L'extraction de la pollucite se fait \u00e0 tr\u00e8s petite \u00e9chelle et de mani\u00e8re s\u00e9lective.<br \/>\nLes \u00c9tats-Unis poss\u00e8dent des gisements de minerai de c\u00e9sium \u00e0 faible teneur dans le Dakota du Sud et le Maine, dont l'exploitation n'est pas rentable \u00e0 l'heure actuelle. Par cons\u00e9quent, les \u00c9tats-Unis importent 100% du c\u00e9sium qu'ils utilisent, principalement du Canada. Les autres pays producteurs de c\u00e9sium sont l'Afrique du Sud et le Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-28636a5f07a69350c\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-28636a5f07a69350c uvc-8491\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-28636a5f07a69350c h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Utilisations<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Le c\u00e9sium et les compos\u00e9s du c\u00e9sium ont un certain nombre d'utilisations et d'applications int\u00e9ressantes. Ils sont par exemple utilis\u00e9s comme catalyseurs dans les r\u00e9actions chimiques. Comme il est facilement ionis\u00e9 par la lumi\u00e8re, le c\u00e9sium m\u00e9tallique est utilis\u00e9 dans les cellules photo\u00e9lectriques et les d\u00e9tecteurs infrarouges. (Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment ionis\u00e9 est transform\u00e9 d'un \u00e9l\u00e9ment \u00e0 charge neutre en un ion \u00e0 charge \u00e9lectrique). Les compos\u00e9s de c\u00e9sium sont utilis\u00e9s dans les piles alcalines sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es con\u00e7ues pour fonctionner dans des climats inf\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 z\u00e9ro. Le carbonate de c\u00e9sium est utilis\u00e9 dans la production de verre sp\u00e9cial et de produits en verre.<\/p>\n<p>L'horloge la plus pr\u00e9cise au monde, l'\"horloge atomique\", mesure le temps en se basant sur la vibration tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cise des \u00e9lectrons de l'enveloppe ext\u00e9rieure de l'atome de c\u00e9sium. Cette horloge a une pr\u00e9cision de 5 secondes tous les 300 ans !<\/p>\n<p>Le c\u00e9sium 137 est radioactif et peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 en radioth\u00e9rapie pour traiter certains cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Les ing\u00e9nieurs sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s dans les voyages spatiaux ont d\u00e9couvert que la combustion du c\u00e9sium dans l'espace est une forme de carburant tr\u00e8s efficace.
