Il poss\u00e8de des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s magn\u00e9tiques similaires \u00e0 celles du fer. Il n'existe pas de min\u00e9raux importants de cobalt. Il est rare et s'obtient principalement par le raffinage du minerai de nickel. Il est utilis\u00e9 dans les superalliages pour les moteurs \u00e0 r\u00e9action, les aimants chimiques et les carbures c\u00e9ment\u00e9s pour les outils de coupe. Les principaux pays producteurs de cobalt sont la R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo, la Zambie, le Canada, Cuba, l'Australie et la Russie. Les \u00c9tats-Unis consomment environ un tiers de la production mondiale totale. Les ressources en cobalt aux \u00c9tats-Unis sont de faible qualit\u00e9 et la production \u00e0 partir de ces gisements n'est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas rentable.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-61296a5e1428c18e6\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-61296a5e1428c18e6 uvc-8288\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-61296a5e1428c18e6 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Relation avec l'exploitation mini\u00e8re<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Le cobalt est r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 dans les mines de nickel en tant que sous-produit de l'affinage. On estime qu'il y a environ 1 million de tonnes de cobalt disponible en tant que sous-produit aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Le Minnesota poss\u00e8de les plus grands gisements de nickel, suivi de l'Alaska, de la Californie, de l'Idaho, du Missouri, du Montana et de l'Oregon. Les ressources en cobalt identifi\u00e9es dans le monde s'\u00e9l\u00e8vent \u00e0 environ 15 millions de tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Le plancher oc\u00e9anique contient des nodules de mangan\u00e8se qui se forment lorsque l'eau chaude des profondeurs de la Terre entre en contact avec l'eau froide de l'oc\u00e9an. On estime que ces nodules contiennent des millions de tonnes de cobalt, mais il n'est actuellement pas rentable de les r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer.<\/p>\n<p>Tout le cobalt primaire utilis\u00e9 aux \u00c9tats-Unis est import\u00e9 sous forme de cobalt m\u00e9tal, de sels de cobalt et d'oxyde de cobalt. Les importations proviennent principalement de Norv\u00e8ge, de Finlande, du Canada et de Russie.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-56896a5e1428c1932\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-56896a5e1428c1932 uvc-2590\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-56896a5e1428c1932 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Utilisations<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Le cobalt est utilis\u00e9 par les civilisations depuis des si\u00e8cles pour cr\u00e9er des verres, des c\u00e9ramiques, des poteries et des carreaux d'un bleu profond et magnifique. De la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re, il est utilis\u00e9 pour fabriquer des pigments de peinture.<\/p>\n<p>Outre ces utilisations traditionnelles, le cobalt est utilis\u00e9 dans un certain nombre d'applications industrielles. L'alliage du cobalt avec d'autres m\u00e9taux permet de cr\u00e9er des aimants tr\u00e8s puissants. Les superalliages contenant du cobalt sont utilis\u00e9s dans la production de moteurs \u00e0 r\u00e9action et de turbines \u00e0 gaz pour la production d'\u00e9nergie. Ces superalliages repr\u00e9sentent pr\u00e8s de la moiti\u00e9 du cobalt utilis\u00e9 chaque ann\u00e9e. Une partie du cobalt est utilis\u00e9e pour fabriquer des mat\u00e9riaux r\u00e9sistants \u00e0 la coupe et \u00e0 l'usure.<\/p>\n<p>Un isotope synth\u00e9tique du cobalt, le cobalt 60, produit des rayons gamma.
