Un tr\u00e8s petit nombre de grenats sont suffisamment purs et sans d\u00e9faut pour \u00eatre taill\u00e9s en pierres pr\u00e9cieuses. La plus grande partie de l'exploitation mini\u00e8re du grenat concerne le grenat massif qui est broy\u00e9 et utilis\u00e9 pour fabriquer des abrasifs. Le grenat appartient au groupe des min\u00e9raux silicat\u00e9s ; en d'autres termes, la formule chimique complexe du grenat comprend la mol\u00e9cule de silicate (SiO4). Les diff\u00e9rentes vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de grenat contiennent diff\u00e9rents ions m\u00e9talliques, tels que le fer, l'aluminium, le magn\u00e9sium et le chrome. Dans les sites \u00e0 roche dure, comme la mine Barton dans le nord de l'\u00c9tat de New York, les m\u00e9thodes \u00e0 ciel ouvert sont employ\u00e9es depuis des d\u00e9cennies. En Chine, l'extraction de la roche dure peut consister en des m\u00e9thodes plus primitives, y compris l'extraction \u00e0 la main.<\/p>\n<p>Les grenats sont extraits et trait\u00e9s plus facilement \u00e0 partir de d\u00e9p\u00f4ts alluviaux. Par exemple, \u00e0 la mine d'Emerald Creek dans l'Idaho, le grenat est r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 dans les graviers des cours d'eau \u00e0 partir de fentes creus\u00e9es par des pelleteuses ou de petites pelles \u00e0 benne tra\u00eenante. Ces graviers sont pass\u00e9s dans un tr\u00e9mail pour rejeter la taille exc\u00e9dentaire, et le grenat est concentr\u00e9 sur de grandes tables \u00e0 jaugeage humide. Le grenat est ensuite exp\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 l'usine pour le traitement final et l'emballage.<\/p>\n<p>Les gisements de plage, tels que ceux exploit\u00e9s en Australie occidentale et dans le sud de l'Inde, se pr\u00eatent \u00e0 des techniques de terrassement peu co\u00fbteuses utilisant des grattoirs et des bulldozers pour d\u00e9couper et creuser des bancs parall\u00e8les \u00e0 la tendance du gisement de plage et\/ou de barres. Comme le travail manuel reste au c\u0153ur de la responsabilit\u00e9 communautaire de l'exploitant en Inde, l'exploitation mini\u00e8re m\u00e9canis\u00e9e ne repr\u00e9sente qu'une partie de l'activit\u00e9 mini\u00e8re dans ce pays.<\/p>\n<p>En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, le traitement implique la s\u00e9paration du grenat le plus lourd des min\u00e9raux de gangue plus l\u00e9gers et la s\u00e9paration ult\u00e9rieure du grenat en classes de taille distinctes con\u00e7ues pour r\u00e9pondre aux besoins de march\u00e9s sp\u00e9cifiques. Apr\u00e8s le concassage (qui est d\u00e9termin\u00e9 par la nature du gisement sp\u00e9cifique ou le march\u00e9 desservi), les minerais sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement lav\u00e9s pour s\u00e9parer les mat\u00e9riaux en fonction de leur gravit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifique. La plupart des exploitants utilisent des classificateurs en spirale traditionnels pour cette \u00e9tape, certains en association avec des hydrosizeurs. Au moins une entreprise utilise des m\u00e9thodes de flottation pour s\u00e9parer le grenat des fractions lourdes non magn\u00e9tiques. Les concentr\u00e9s sont s\u00e9ch\u00e9s, puis tri\u00e9s \u00e0 l'aide de s\u00e9parateurs magn\u00e9tiques et \u00e9lectrostatiques \u00e0 haute intensit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Un producteur qui commercialise des qualit\u00e9s tr\u00e8s fines pour les march\u00e9s de la rectification et du polissage de pr\u00e9cision utilise \u00e9galement des techniques de s\u00e9paration par voie humide pour le contr\u00f4le de la qualit\u00e9. La s\u00e9paration finale permet d'obtenir un produit contenant plus de 95% de min\u00e9raux de grenat, qui contient g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement moins de 0,5% de quartz en poids. Le papier de verre au grenat est la premi\u00e8re application de ce min\u00e9ral. Il est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 pour fabriquer un certain nombre de produits similaires, notamment des bandes, des disques et des rubans abrasifs.
