Il se forme sous forme de veines et de diss\u00e9minations dans les roches m\u00e9tamorphiques \u00e0 la suite du m\u00e9tamorphisme de la mati\u00e8re organique incluse dans les d\u00e9p\u00f4ts de calcaire. Il s'agit d'un min\u00e9ral extr\u00eamement mou qui se brise en minuscules paillettes flexibles qui glissent facilement les unes sur les autres. Cette caract\u00e9ristique explique la sensation grasse caract\u00e9ristique du graphite. Cette caract\u00e9ristique graisseuse fait du graphite un bon lubrifiant. Comme il s'agit d'un mat\u00e9riau solide, il est connu comme un lubrifiant sec. Il est utile dans les applications o\u00f9 les lubrifiants \"humides\", tels que l'huile, ne peuvent pas \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s. Le graphite est le seul \u00e9l\u00e9ment non m\u00e9tallique qui soit un bon conducteur d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Le graphite naturel est principalement utilis\u00e9 dans ce que l'on appelle les applications r\u00e9fractaires. Les applications r\u00e9fractaires sont celles qui impliquent une chaleur extr\u00eamement \u00e9lev\u00e9e et exigent donc des mat\u00e9riaux qui ne fondent pas ou ne se d\u00e9sint\u00e8grent pas dans des conditions aussi extr\u00eames. Les creusets utilis\u00e9s dans l'industrie sid\u00e9rurgique en sont un exemple. Ces applications r\u00e9fractaires repr\u00e9sentent la majeure partie de l'utilisation du graphite.<\/p>\n<p>Il est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9 pour fabriquer des garnitures de freins, des lubrifiants et des moules dans les fonderies. De 1942 \u00e0 la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, seules les m\u00e9thodes \u00e0 ciel ouvert ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es, car l'exploitation des roches alt\u00e9r\u00e9es \u00e9tait relativement facile. Du graphite a \u00e9t\u00e9 extrait sous terre \u00e0 Dillon, dans le Montana, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais l'exploitation a cess\u00e9 peu apr\u00e8s, car elle \u00e9tait trop co\u00fbteuse pour concurrencer le graphite sri-lankais.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 Madagascar, l'exploitation se fait enti\u00e8rement \u00e0 ciel ouvert, mais en Bavi\u00e8re, en Cor\u00e9e, au Mexique et au Sri Lanka, l'exploitation souterraine est pratiqu\u00e9e en raison de la profondeur et des caract\u00e9ristiques physiques des gisements. Au Mexique, les mines souterraines sont situ\u00e9es \u00e0 une profondeur de 100 \u00e0 400 m sous la surface, mesur\u00e9e en fonction de l'angle du filon. Certaines des mines les plus anciennes du Sri Lanka atteignent des profondeurs sup\u00e9rieures \u00e0 450 m sur un plan vertical. Pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, les op\u00e9rations mini\u00e8res au Sri Lanka \u00e9taient primitives et l'extraction du minerai \u00e9tait lente et fastidieuse. Les mines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 m\u00e9canis\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>Les op\u00e9rations \u00e0 Madagascar \u00e9taient \u00e9galement primitives car le faible co\u00fbt de la main-d'\u0153uvre interdisait la m\u00e9canisation. Apr\u00e8s 1938, les mines ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 utiliser des \u00e9quipements m\u00e9caniques pour enlever les morts-terrains, et les bulldozers et les tracteurs ont facilement enlev\u00e9 les schistes graphiteux.<\/p>\n<p>La demande mondiale de graphite a augment\u00e9 r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement tout au long de l'ann\u00e9e 2012 et en 2013. Cette augmentation r\u00e9sulte de l'am\u00e9lioration des conditions \u00e9conomiques mondiales et de son impact sur les industries utilisatrices de graphite.<\/p>\n<p>Les principales sources d'importation de graphite naturel \u00e9taient, par ordre d\u00e9croissant de tonnage, la Chine, le Mexique, le Canada, le Br\u00e9sil et Madagascar, qui repr\u00e9sentaient ensemble 97% du tonnage et 90% de la valeur des importations totales. Le Mexique et le Vi\u00eat Nam ont fourni tout le graphite amorphe, et le Sri Lanka a fourni toute la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de graphite en morceaux et en poussi\u00e8res. La Chine, le Canada et Madagascar ont \u00e9t\u00e9, par ordre d\u00e9croissant de tonnage, les principaux fournisseurs de graphite cristallin en paillettes et en poussi\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>En 2013, la Chine a produit la majorit\u00e9 du graphite mondial.
