Il s'agit d'un min\u00e9ral tr\u00e8s mou qui peut former de tr\u00e8s jolis cristaux color\u00e9s, parfois extr\u00eamement grands. Le gypse massif se forme dans les couches de roches s\u00e9dimentaires, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement en lits ou couches \u00e9pais. Il se forme dans des lagunes o\u00f9 les eaux oc\u00e9aniques riches en calcium et en sulfate peuvent s'\u00e9vaporer lentement et \u00eatre r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement r\u00e9aliment\u00e9es par de nouvelles sources d'eau. Il en r\u00e9sulte l'accumulation de grandes couches de gypse s\u00e9dimentaire. Le gypse est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement associ\u00e9 aux gisements de sel gemme et de soufre. Il est trait\u00e9 et utilis\u00e9 comme plaque murale pr\u00e9fabriqu\u00e9e ou comme pl\u00e2tre industriel ou de construction, utilis\u00e9 dans la fabrication du ciment, l'agriculture et d'autres utilisations.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-7866a20f43edfc82\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-7866a20f43edfc82 uvc-857\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-7866a20f43edfc82 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Relation avec l'exploitation mini\u00e8re<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>La majeure partie du gypse produit dans le monde provient d'exploitations mini\u00e8res \u00e0 ciel ouvert. Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, le gypse est extrait dans environ 19 \u00c9tats. Les \u00c9tats qui produisent le plus de gypse sont l'Oklahoma, l'Iowa, le Nevada, le Texas et la Californie. Ensemble, ces \u00c9tats repr\u00e9sentent environ deux tiers de la production annuelle de gypse des \u00c9tats-Unis. Plus de 30 millions de tonnes de gypse sont consomm\u00e9es chaque ann\u00e9e aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Le Canada, le Mexique et l'Espagne sont d'autres producteurs importants de gypse brut. Au total, plus de 90 pays produisent du gypse. Dans la plupart des exploitations de gypse \u00e0 ciel ouvert, les bancs sont for\u00e9s et dynamit\u00e9s \u00e0 l'aide de nitrate d'ammonium comme explosif. Le gypse \u00e9tant tr\u00e8s tendre, la plupart des foreuses peuvent le percer \u00e0 une vitesse d'environ 23 pieds par minute. Il arrive que les trous de forage soient mouill\u00e9s, ce qui peut poser des probl\u00e8mes avec le nitrate d'ammonium. Dans ce cas, le nitrate d'ammonium est ensach\u00e9 dans des sacs en plastique avant d'\u00eatre descendu dans le trou de mine. Les mines utilisent environ 1 kg d'explosifs pour chaque tonne de gypse qu'elles font sauter.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-90126a20f43edfce6\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-90126a20f43edfce6 uvc-9573\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-90126a20f43edfce6 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Utilisations<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>L'utilisation la plus importante du gypse est la fabrication de plaques murales et de produits en pl\u00e2tre. Toutes les maisons modernes d'Am\u00e9rique du Nord et d'autres pays d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s utilisent une grande quantit\u00e9 de plaques de pl\u00e2tre pour les murs int\u00e9rieurs. Les \u00c9tats-Unis sont le premier consommateur mondial de plaques de pl\u00e2tre, avec plus de 30 milliards de pieds carr\u00e9s par an. Une partie du gypse est utilis\u00e9e pour fabriquer du ciment Portland, et une autre partie est utilis\u00e9e dans des applications agricoles.
