Il est extrait de minerais de p\u00e9talite (LiAl(Si2O5)2, de l\u00e9pidolite K(Li,Al)3(Al,Si,Rb)4O10(F,OH)2, de spodum\u00e8ne LiAl(SiO3)2 et de saumures souterraines. La l\u00e9pidolite et le spodum\u00e8ne sont d'autres min\u00e9raux courants qui contiennent du lithium. Les quantit\u00e9s commerciales de ces trois min\u00e9raux se trouvent dans un d\u00e9p\u00f4t de roche ign\u00e9e sp\u00e9cial que les g\u00e9ologues appellent pegmatite. Dans les pegmatites, le magma se refroidit si lentement que les cristaux ont le temps de devenir tr\u00e8s grands. La l\u00e9pidolite \u00e9tant un type de mica, ses cristaux se transforment en longues feuilles minces.<\/p>\n<p>Les ressources en lithium sont d\u00e9taill\u00e9es dans les USGS Mineral Commodities Summaries.<\/p>\n<p>L'exploitation mini\u00e8re du lithium :<\/p>\n<p>Le lithium est souvent r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de saumures ou d'eau contenant une forte concentration de carbonate de lithium. Les saumures souterraines pi\u00e9g\u00e9es dans la cro\u00fbte terrestre sont une source majeure de carbonate de lithium. Ces sources sont moins co\u00fbteuses \u00e0 exploiter que les roches telles que le spodum\u00e8ne, la p\u00e9talite et d'autres min\u00e9raux contenant du lithium.<\/p>\n<p>La production de saumure de lithium commence par le pompage de la saumure dans des bassins d'\u00e9vaporation. Pendant 12 \u00e0 18 mois, la concentration de la saumure augmente jusqu'\u00e0 6 000 ppm de Li gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l'\u00e9vaporation solaire. Plus de 50% de lithium extrait sont utilis\u00e9s dans les piles.
