Il peut \u00eatre martel\u00e9 en feuilles minces, ce qui signifie qu'il est mall\u00e9able. Le nickel a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert en 1751 par Axel Fredrik Cronstedt.<\/p>\n<p>Le fer, le cobalt et le nickel (num\u00e9ros 26, 27 et 28 du tableau p\u00e9riodique) sont les trois seuls \u00e9l\u00e9ments connus pour \u00eatre ferromagn\u00e9tiques (le type de magn\u00e9tisme le plus fort) au-dessus de la temp\u00e9rature ambiante. Parmi ces trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments, le nickel est le moins magn\u00e9tique. Lorsque ces trois m\u00e9taux ferromagn\u00e9tiques sont alli\u00e9s \u00e0 d'autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments, on obtient un aimant exceptionnellement puissant, appel\u00e9 aimant alnico. Cet alliage conduit \u00e9galement assez bien la chaleur et l'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Les aimants alnico sont les seuls aimants qui conservent un magn\u00e9tisme utile lorsqu'ils sont chauff\u00e9s \u00e0 tr\u00e8s haute temp\u00e9rature.<\/p>\n<p>Le nickel se trouve g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement dans des gisements lat\u00e9ritiques, c'est-\u00e0-dire des gisements dans lesquels une forte alt\u00e9ration atmosph\u00e9rique lixivie la roche riche en nickel et concentre le nickel \u00e0 la surface ou pr\u00e8s de la surface de la terre. Les gisements de sulfure de nickel fournissent le reste. Il existe \u00e9galement de petites quantit\u00e9s de nickel sous-produit r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de minerais de cuivre et de palladium-platine dans l'ouest des \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p>\n<p>Plus de 80 000 tonnes de nickel sont r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9es chaque ann\u00e9e par le recyclage de l'acier inoxydable et d'autres alliages de nickel et de fer. Cela repr\u00e9sente environ 40% du nickel utilis\u00e9 chaque ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>On estime qu'il y a environ 140 millions de tonnes de nickel disponibles dans les gisements identifi\u00e9s. Quatre-vingt-quatre millions de tonnes, soit 60 % du nickel total disponible, se trouvent dans des gisements lat\u00e9ritiques. Un gisement dans lequel la pluie et les eaux de surface ont lessiv\u00e9 la roche riche en nickel et concentr\u00e9 le nickel \u00e0 la surface ou pr\u00e8s de la surface de la Terre est un gisement lat\u00e9ritique. Les gisements de sulfure de nickel contiennent les quarante pour cent restants (56 millions de tonnes).<\/p>\n<p>La demande de nickel aux \u00c9tats-Unis est beaucoup plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e que ce que le nickel recycl\u00e9 peut fournir, c'est pourquoi le nickel est import\u00e9 dans le pays. L'acier inoxydable contient \u00e9galement du molybd\u00e8ne, du titane et du nickel, afin d'accro\u00eetre sa r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion.
