Banyak mineral umum, termasuk feldspar, mengandung aluminium, tetapi mengekstraksi logam dari sebagian besar mineral sangat boros energi dan mahal. Oleh karena itu, bauksit merupakan sumber utama aluminium dunia dan memasok 99% aluminium logam. Pada operasi tambang terbuka, bauksit biasanya diekstraksi dari lapisan setebal 4-6 meter di bawah lapisan tanah penutup yang tebalnya bisa mencapai 10 meter, yang ditutupi oleh lapisan tanah lapisan atas yang tipis dengan vegetasi yang menyertainya. Pada beberapa lokasi penambangan nonmetalurgi, ketebalan lapisan tanah penutup dapat mencapai 70 m atau lebih.<br \/>\nOperasi penambangan bauksit di tambang terbuka dapat menggunakan backhoe, ekskavator bucket wheel, buldoser, dragline, sekop listrik, dan scraper untuk pengupasan lapisan tanah penutup dari bijih. Selain itu, dragline, front-end loader, dan power shovel biasanya digunakan untuk menggali dan memuat bijih mentah. Pemuatan biasanya dilakukan ke dalam truk pengangkut, atau langsung ke gerbong kereta api atau ke sistem konveyor, untuk diangkut ke fasilitas pengolahan bauksit atau tempat penyimpanan.<\/p>\n<p>Penambangan Bauksit Bawah Tanah: IMAR Edisi ke-7<br \/>\nTergantung pada sifat bauksitnya, operasi bawah tanah biasanya menggunakan serangkaian teknik penambangan bawah tanah standar, yang meliputi block caving yang dikombinasikan dengan penyusutan stoping, sublevel stoping, top-slicing, longwall, dan metode ruang dan pilar. Masuknya air yang berlebihan merupakan masalah yang signifikan pada sebagian besar tambang ini, terutama pada tambang yang dikembangkan di bawah permukaan air karst.
