Kadmium memiliki banyak kemiripan kimiawi dengan seng dan sering kali diperoleh dari bijih seng utama, yaitu sfalerit. Oleh karena itu, kadmium diproduksi di negara-negara di mana seng dimurnikan, tidak harus di negara tempat bijih seng ditambang. Cina, Jepang, dan Korea adalah produsen terbesar di dunia, diikuti oleh Meksiko, Amerika Serikat, Belanda, India, Inggris, Peru, dan Jerman. Sekitar tiga perempat dari kadmium yang dikonsumsi setiap tahunnya digunakan untuk membuat baterai. Baterai nikel-kadmium dapat diisi ulang dan telah digunakan secara luas di telepon seluler, alat-alat listrik tanpa kabel, kamera, komputer jinjing, dan berbagai macam produk rumah tangga. Aplikasi-aplikasi ini merupakan sebagian besar baterai Ni-cad yang diproduksi. Sisanya merupakan baterai yang digunakan untuk catu daya darurat di kamar rumah sakit, untuk lampu darurat, pertukaran telepon, dll.<\/p>\n<p>Cadmium is useful in a small number of other applications. Cadmium sulfide (also called cadmium yellow) is used as a paint pigment. Cadmium is used to make low-temperature melting alloys, such as solder and Wood\u2019s Metal for indoor sprinkler systems. The latter is an alloy of 50%Bi, 25%Pb, 12.5% Sn, and 12.5%Cd which melts at about 160 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature of a very hot shower. Cadmium compounds are used both in black and white and color television tubes. It is used as a stabilizing compound in plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Kadmium juga memiliki sifat fisik yang mampu menyerap neutron. Sebagai hasilnya, kadmium digunakan dalam batang kendali reaktor nuklir untuk meredam reaksi nuklir dan menjaga reaksi fisi tetap terkendali.<\/p>\n<p>Cina adalah konsumen kadmium terbesar di dunia, terutama untuk pembuatan baterai.
