Unsur ini memiliki sifat magnetik yang mirip dengan besi. Tidak ada mineral kobalt yang signifikan. Mineral ini jarang ditemukan dan sebagian besar diperoleh melalui pemurnian bijih nikel. Kobalt digunakan dalam paduan super untuk mesin jet, magnet bahan kimia, dan karbida yang disemen untuk alat pemotong. Negara-negara penghasil kobalt utama termasuk Republik Demokratik Kongo, Zambia, Kanada, Kuba, Australia, dan Rusia. Amerika Serikat mengkonsumsi sekitar sepertiga dari total produksi dunia. Diperkirakan ada sekitar 1 juta ton kobalt produk sampingan yang tersedia di Amerika Serikat. Minnesota memiliki cadangan nikel terbesar diikuti oleh Alaska, California, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, dan Oregon. Dengan cara yang sama, kobalt juga digunakan untuk membuat pigmen cat.<\/p>\n<p>Selain penggunaan tradisional ini, kobalt digunakan dalam sejumlah aplikasi industri. Ketika kobalt dipadukan dengan logam lain, akan tercipta magnet yang sangat kuat. Superalloy yang mengandung kobalt digunakan dalam produksi mesin jet dan mesin turbin gas untuk pembangkit energi.
