Nikel dapat ditempa menjadi lembaran tipis, yang berarti mudah dibentuk. Nikel ditemukan pada tahun 1751 oleh Axel Fredrik Cronstedt.<\/p>\n<p>Besi, kobalt dan nikel (nomor 26, 27 dan 28 pada Tabel Periodik) adalah tiga elemen yang diketahui bersifat feromagnetik (jenis magnet terkuat) di atas suhu kamar. Dari ketiganya, nikel adalah yang paling tidak bersifat magnetis. Ketika ketiga logam feromagnetik dipadukan bersama dalam kombinasi dengan beberapa elemen tambahan, terciptalah magnet yang luar biasa kuat, yang disebut magnet alnico. Paduan ini juga menghantarkan panas dan listrik dengan cukup baik. Magnet alnico adalah satu-satunya magnet yang memiliki daya tarik yang berguna ketika dipanaskan dalam keadaan panas.<\/p>\n<p>Nikel biasanya ditemukan dalam endapan laterit, yaitu endapan yang mengalami pelapukan yang kuat sehingga batuan yang kaya nikel terkonsentrasi di atau dekat permukaan bumi. Deposit nikel sulfida menyediakan sisanya. Terdapat juga sejumlah kecil produk sampingan nikel yang diperoleh dari bijih tembaga dan paladium-platinum di Amerika Serikat bagian Barat.<\/p>\n<p>Lebih dari 80.000 ton nikel diperoleh kembali setiap tahunnya dengan mendaur ulang baja tahan karat dan paduan nikel-besi lainnya. Ini mewakili sekitar 40% nikel yang digunakan setiap tahun.<\/p>\n<p>Diperkirakan terdapat sekitar 140 juta ton nikel yang tersedia dalam deposit yang teridentifikasi. Delapan puluh empat juta ton, atau 60 persen dari total nikel yang tersedia berada dalam deposit laterit. Deposit yang terbentuk akibat hujan dan air permukaan yang mencairkan batuan kaya nikel dan memusatkan nikel di atau dekat permukaan bumi adalah deposit laterit. Deposit nikel sulfida mengandung empat puluh persen sisanya (56 juta ton).<\/p>\n<p>Permintaan nikel di Amerika Serikat jauh lebih tinggi daripada yang dapat disediakan oleh nikel daur ulang, sehingga nikel diimpor ke negara tersebut. Baja tahan karat juga mengandung sejumlah molibdenum, titanium, dan nikel, untuk meningkatkan ketahanannya terhadap korosi.
