Biasanya terjadi dalam butiran kecil yang terisolasi, sebagai mineral aksesori dalam batuan beku dan metamorf seperti granit, pegmatit, sekis, dan gneiss. Butiran-butiran ini tahan terhadap pelapukan dan terkonsentrasi di tanah dan sedimen di lereng bawah dari batuan induk. Mineral berat lainnya yang terakumulasi dengan monasit termasuk emas, platinum, magnetit, ilmenit, rutil, zirkon, dan berbagai batu permata. Pasir berat yang diperoleh diproses untuk memisahkan mineral berat tersebut, dan fraksi ringan dikembalikan ke deposit. Sedimen sungai, teras aluvial, sedimen pantai, teras pantai, dan sedimen air dangkal semuanya telah dikeruk untuk mendapatkan mineral berat.<\/p>\n<p>Saat ini, sebagian besar monasit dunia diproduksi di perairan lepas pantai India, Malaysia, Vietnam, dan Brasil. India Selatan dan Sri Lanka memiliki sumber daya monasit lepas pantai yang paling luas yang diketahui. Australia pernah menjadi produsen monasit terbesar di dunia dan diperkirakan memiliki sumber daya monasit terbesar di dunia. Di masa lalu, monasit ditambang dari endapan aliran sungai di Idaho. Endapan ini terbentuk dari pelapukan batolit Idaho. Monasit juga telah ditambang sebagai produk sampingan dari endapan lepas pantai di sepanjang pantai tenggara Amerika Serikat, dari North Carolina hingga Florida.
