Muitos minerais comuns, incluindo os feldspatos, cont\u00eam alum\u00ednio, mas a extra\u00e7\u00e3o do metal da maioria dos minerais \u00e9 muito intensiva em termos energ\u00e9ticos e dispendiosa. Por isso, a bauxite \u00e9 a principal fonte de alum\u00ednio do mundo e fornece 99% de alum\u00ednio met\u00e1lico. \u00c9 tamb\u00e9m utilizada na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de corindo sint\u00e9tico e refract\u00e1rios aluminosos.<\/p>\n<p>Bauxite \u00e9 o nome de uma mistura de minerais semelhantes que cont\u00eam \u00f3xidos de alum\u00ednio hidratados. Esses minerais s\u00e3o a gibbsita, o di\u00e1sporo e a boehmita. A bauxite forma-se quando a s\u00edlica das rochas que cont\u00eam alum\u00ednio (isto \u00e9, rochas com um elevado teor de feldspato mineral) \u00e9 lavada (lixiviada). Este processo de meteoriza\u00e7\u00e3o ocorre em climas tropicais e subtropicais.
