Tem um ponto de fus\u00e3o muito elevado de 2349 \u00b0F (1287 \u00b0C). Encontra-se na natureza principalmente como bertrandite, que \u00e9 extra\u00edda no Utah, ou como berilo. A combina\u00e7\u00e3o da sua leveza e do seu elevado ponto de fus\u00e3o torna-o valioso para o fabrico de ligas met\u00e1licas que s\u00e3o utilizadas em componentes electr\u00f3nicos e el\u00e9ctricos, na ind\u00fastria aeroespacial, em autom\u00f3veis, em computadores, em equipamento de perfura\u00e7\u00e3o de petr\u00f3leo e g\u00e1s e em telecomunica\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ultimate-heading-12306a5f7a74840f2\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-12306a5f7a74840f2 uvc-7622\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-12306a5f7a74840f2 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#1e73be;\">Rela\u00e7\u00e3o com a explora\u00e7\u00e3o mineira<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>O mineral mais comum que cont\u00e9m ber\u00edlio \u00e9 o berilo, que se encontra no granito e em rochas \u00edgneas especiais, derivadas do granito, conhecidas como pegmatitos. As variedades coloridas e transparentes do berilo podem ser gemas, como a esmeralda (verde), a \u00e1gua-marinha (azul-verde), o heliodoro (amarelo) e a morganite (cor-de-rosa). Algumas das mais antigas gemas conhecidas foram extra\u00eddas pelos Ass\u00edrios, Babil\u00f3nios, Hititas e Persas entre 5000 e 400 A.E.C.<\/p>\n<p>Para al\u00e9m do berilo, o ber\u00edlio encontra-se no mineral bertrandite, que se tornou, nos \u00faltimos anos, um importante min\u00e9rio deste elemento. A bertrandite encontra-se em certas rochas vulc\u00e2nicas derivadas do granito.<\/p>\n<p>O min\u00e9rio de bertrandite extra\u00eddo no Utah constitui a quase totalidade da produ\u00e7\u00e3o dos EUA, que representa cerca de 90% da oferta mundial. A China produz a maior parte do restante, a partir de min\u00e9rios de berilo. Mo\u00e7ambique e alguns outros pa\u00edses extraem pequenas quantidades de berilo. Os Estados Unidos produzem e exportam grandes quantidades de ligas e compostos de ber\u00edlio, pelo que s\u00e3o um importador l\u00edquido de min\u00e9rios, mas um exportador l\u00edquido de produtos acabados de ber\u00edlio.<\/p>\n<p>Pequenas quantidades de ber\u00edlio podem ser obtidas atrav\u00e9s da reciclagem de sucata contendo ber\u00edlio.<\/p>\n<p>Explora\u00e7\u00e3o mineira de Bertrandite:<br \/>\nAo contr\u00e1rio do berilo, em que o mineral pode ser identificado pela cor e pela estrutura cristalina, a mineraliza\u00e7\u00e3o da bertrandite n\u00e3o pode ser reconhecida a olho nu. Consequentemente, s\u00e3o realizadas avalia\u00e7\u00f5es geol\u00f3gicas e geoqu\u00edmicas numa \u00e1rea espec\u00edfica, seguidas de um programa de perfura\u00e7\u00e3o para determinar se existe um corpo de min\u00e9rio econ\u00f3mico. Depois de delinear um corpo de min\u00e9rio, a sobrecarga \u00e9 removida at\u00e9 2 m do min\u00e9rio. Na cobertura de 2 m restante, s\u00e3o constru\u00eddas bancadas de perfura\u00e7\u00e3o em centros de 7,5 m para recolher amostras do corpo de min\u00e9rio em intervalos de 0,6 m. A informa\u00e7\u00e3o obtida atrav\u00e9s da an\u00e1lise das amostras permite o desenvolvimento de sec\u00e7\u00f5es transversais e mapas de contorno. Estes mapas s\u00e3o utilizados para planear as opera\u00e7\u00f5es de extra\u00e7\u00e3o e processamento. Ap\u00f3s a prepara\u00e7\u00e3o dos mapas, o restante da sobrecarga \u00e9 removido e o min\u00e9rio \u00e9 extra\u00eddo, normalmente com um raspador auto-carreg\u00e1vel. Devido \u00e0 distribui\u00e7\u00e3o irregular do grau de min\u00e9rio no solo, o min\u00e9rio \u00e9 extra\u00eddo de \u00e1reas definidas por dados de perfura\u00e7\u00e3o e colocado numa pilha de reserva em camadas para obter uma mistura mais homog\u00e9nea. S\u00e3o ent\u00e3o efectuadas mais perfura\u00e7\u00f5es, amostragens e ensaios do min\u00e9rio armazenado para gerar um mapa que delineia a distribui\u00e7\u00e3o do grau de min\u00e9rio em toda a pilha. Como o ber\u00edlio \u00e9 muito leve e tem uma elevada temperatura de fus\u00e3o, \u00e9 um metal ideal para utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o na ind\u00fastria aeroespacial e de defesa, quase sempre ligado a outros metais. O metal ber\u00edlio tem tamb\u00e9m a interessante carater\u00edstica de ser el\u00e1stico. Por conseguinte, \u00e9 utilizado no fabrico de molas, engrenagens e outros componentes de m\u00e1quinas que necessitam de um certo grau de elasticidade. Uma outra aplica\u00e7\u00e3o quotidiana \u00e9 o fabrico de bombas de gasolina, porque uma liga de cobre e ber\u00edlio (bronze de ber\u00edlio) n\u00e3o produz fa\u00edscas quando choca com outros metais, nem emite fa\u00edscas de eletricidade est\u00e1tica.<\/p>\n<p>As varetas feitas de metal e \u00f3xido de ber\u00edlio s\u00e3o utilizadas para controlar reac\u00e7\u00f5es nucleares porque o ber\u00edlio absorve os neutr\u00f5es melhor do que qualquer outro metal.<\/p>\n<p>A maioria dos organismos n\u00e3o depende do ber\u00edlio para crescer. De facto, as poeiras e os fumos de ber\u00edlio podem ser perigosos para a sa\u00fade humana quando inalados.
