O mineral de ars\u00e9nio mais comum \u00e9 a arsenopirite, um composto de ferro, ars\u00e9nio e enxofre. No entanto, muitos pa\u00edses produzem ars\u00e9nio como subproduto da fundi\u00e7\u00e3o de min\u00e9rios met\u00e1licos. A China \u00e9 de longe o maior produtor, com o Chile e Marrocos a fornecerem quantidades importantes, e uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o menor de cerca de uma d\u00fazia de outros pa\u00edses com fundi\u00e7\u00f5es de metais.<\/p>\n<p>Os Estados Unidos n\u00e3o extraem ars\u00e9nio desde 1985 e importam todo o ars\u00e9nio met\u00e1lico e compostos de ars\u00e9nio que consomem. A maior parte \u00e9 utilizada para ligar (misturar) o ars\u00e9nio com chumbo, cobre ou outros metais para utiliza\u00e7\u00f5es espec\u00edficas. Como metaloide, o ars\u00e9nio \u00e9 um semicondutor, tal como o sil\u00edcio. Algum ars\u00e9nio \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m utilizado no fabrico de vidro.<\/p>\n<p>A maior parte do consumo nos EUA \u00e9 sob a forma de arseniato de cobre cromatado (CCA), um produto qu\u00edmico utilizado como conservante de madeira para postes telef\u00f3nicos, postes de veda\u00e7\u00e3o, estacas e madeiras de funda\u00e7\u00e3o. O CCA reduz significativamente a podrid\u00e3o e elimina a destrui\u00e7\u00e3o da madeira por t\u00e9rmitas, formigas e outros insectos. No entanto, a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o do CCA est\u00e1 a ser gradualmente eliminada nos EUA, pelo que se espera uma grande diminui\u00e7\u00e3o do mercado do ars\u00e9nio.<\/p>\n<p>Antigamente, a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o mais importante dos compostos de ars\u00e9nio era como inseticida pulverizado nos campos e pomares.
