Apenas uma mina na Bol\u00edvia \u00e9 uma mina prim\u00e1ria de bismuto; noutros pa\u00edses, o bismuto \u00e9 um subproduto da extra\u00e7\u00e3o de outros metais. O bismuto \u00e9 um metal de pre\u00e7o moderado, custando mais do que o cobre, o chumbo e o zinco, mas muito menos do que o ouro ou a prata. Quase nenhuma das utiliza\u00e7\u00f5es \u00e9 para o bismuto met\u00e1lico puro. A maior parte \u00e9 consumida em ligas de bismuto e em produtos farmac\u00eauticos e qu\u00edmicos. O restante \u00e9 utilizado em cer\u00e2mica, tintas, catalisadores e numa variedade de aplica\u00e7\u00f5es menores.<\/p>\n<p>As ligas de bismuto s\u00e3o \u00fateis por muitas raz\u00f5es:<\/p>\n<p>O bismuto e muitas das suas ligas expandem-se ligeiramente quando solidificam (congelam). Isto permite que o bismuto preencha todos os cantos de um molde para formar uma r\u00e9plica perfeitamente afiada do molde ou do item que est\u00e1 a ser replicado. A utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de ligas de bismuto de baixo ponto de fus\u00e3o est\u00e1 generalizada nos sistemas de aspers\u00e3o dos edif\u00edcios. Quando a liga derrete no ar aquecido pelo fogo, o sprinkler \u00e9 desligado e a \u00e1gua pulveriza o fogo. Esta aplica\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel por mais de um ter\u00e7o do bismuto utilizado anualmente nos Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>O bismuto met\u00e1lico \u00e9 relativamente inerte e n\u00e3o t\u00f3xico. Substituiu o chumbo t\u00f3xico em muitas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es, tais como canaliza\u00e7\u00f5es, balas, proj\u00e9cteis para aves, ligas met\u00e1licas, soldadura e outras aplica\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n<p>Em quarto lugar, muitas ligas de bismuto s\u00e3o relativamente macias e male\u00e1veis. Male\u00e1vel significa que um metal pode ser martelado em folhas finas. O bismuto \u00e9 ligado ao ferro para criar o que \u00e9 conhecido como \"ferros male\u00e1veis\".<\/p>\n<p>Os compostos de bismuto s\u00e3o utilizados em medicamentos para o desconforto g\u00e1strico (da\u00ed o nome comercial Pepto-Bismol), no tratamento de \u00falceras g\u00e1stricas, em cremes calmantes e em cosm\u00e9ticos.<\/p>\n<p>A ind\u00fastria utiliza o bismuto numa variedade de outras aplica\u00e7\u00f5es. O bismuto \u00e9 um catalisador na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de fibras acr\u00edlicas.
