O c\u00e9sio \u00e9 um dos tr\u00eas metais (juntamente com o g\u00e1lio e o merc\u00fario) que s\u00e3o l\u00edquidos \u00e0 temperatura ambiente ou pr\u00f3xima desta.<br \/>\nO c\u00e9sio \u00e9 um metal muito reativo que, quando misturado com \u00e1gua fria, produz uma rea\u00e7\u00e3o explosiva. O seu ponto de fus\u00e3o \u00e9 t\u00e3o baixo que se derrete se o segurarmos na m\u00e3o. No entanto, por ser t\u00e3o reativo, pode queimar gravemente a pele, pelo que deve ser manuseado com muito cuidado.<br \/>\nApenas alguns milhares de quilogramas de c\u00e9sio s\u00e3o utilizados todos os anos. Como \u00e9 facilmente ionizado pela luz, o c\u00e9sio met\u00e1lico \u00e9 utilizado em c\u00e9lulas fotoel\u00e9ctricas e detectores de infravermelhos. (Um elemento que \u00e9 ionizado transforma-se de um elemento de carga neutra num i\u00e3o de carga el\u00e9ctrica). Os compostos de c\u00e9sio s\u00e3o utilizados em pilhas alcalinas especializadas, concebidas para funcionarem em climas abaixo de zero. O carbonato de c\u00e9sio \u00e9 utilizado na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de vidro especial e de produtos de vidro.<\/p>\n<p>O rel\u00f3gio mais preciso do mundo, o \"rel\u00f3gio at\u00f3mico\", mede o tempo com base na vibra\u00e7\u00e3o muito precisa dos electr\u00f5es da camada exterior do \u00e1tomo de c\u00e9sio. Este rel\u00f3gio tem uma precis\u00e3o de 5 segundos a cada 300 anos!<\/p>\n<p>O c\u00e9sio-137 \u00e9 radioativo e pode ser utilizado na radioterapia para tratar certos tipos de cancro.<\/p>\n<p>Os engenheiros de viagens espaciais descobriram que a queima de c\u00e9sio no espa\u00e7o \u00e9 uma forma muito eficiente de combust\u00edvel.
