In the heart of West Africa’s gold-rich terrain, Mali’s alluvial deposits present both opportunity and challenge for mining operations. When a local company approached us with the need for a 200TPH gold wash plant capable of handling sticky clay and rugged conditions, we saw a chance to deliver more than just equipment—we designed a resilient, high-efficiency solution tailored to the region’s unique demands. This case study examines how our customized plant overcame technical challenges, including clay-clogged screens and remote maintenance constraints, while maximizing gold recovery across multiple particle sizes.

Postscript: This project was technically successful, but due to the client’s subsequent financial difficulties, the equipment installation and commissioning work were unfortunately delayed. We sincerely hope that the client will overcome their difficulties and resolve their financial problems soon, so that this advanced production line can be put into operation and create value as quickly as possible. This experience has also served as a wake-up call for both parties: when planning investments, bigger capacity and higher specifications are not always better; the key is to “act within one’s means and match the needs.” Choosing a production line that best suits one’s financial strength, ore characteristics, and market expectations is crucial for achieving sustainable development with controllable risks and optimal benefits. This is also a core issue that we now emphasize and discuss with every client during the initial stages of our negotiations.
We stand firmly with our clients and sincerely hope they can overcome these difficulties soon, allowing this production line, into which so much effort has been invested, to thrive once again.
This experience has also reinforced our belief that successful projects begin with precise planning and prudent investment decisions. It constantly reminds us that when recommending solutions to clients, assess cash flow and risk tolerance. The most suitable production line is always the one that achieves the best balance between technological advancement, investment scale, and operational returns. We are committed to translating this experience into more careful considerations when serving you in the future.
Q & A Session: Addressing the Client’s Critical Concerns
Q1: The client specifically mentioned dealing with “sticky clay” in their alluvial gold ore. How did your equipment design address this common but challenging issue in West African gold mining?
A: Sticky clay presents two main problems: it clogs screening systems and encapsulates fine gold particles, reducing recovery rates. We addressed this with a four-pronged approach: First, we equipped the plant with a heavy-duty trommel scrubber featuring high-pressure water spray nozzles that continuously break down clay clumps. Second, we included 2 units high frequency vibration screen to wash and liberate gold particles. Third, we designed 5 sets of sluice boxes with an aggressive angle that maintains gold capture even with clay-rich material. Finally, we use a meja goyang process the concentrate from the gold sluice box. This combination has proven highly effective in similar West African mining conditions.
Q2: Long working life and low maintenance were paramount requirements given the remote location. What specific design features ensure durability and minimal downtime?
A: We approached this from multiple angles:
- Material Selection: The critical wear components of the trommel scrubber are made from rubber lined inside drum, which offers superior abrasion resistance. The high-frequency vibration screen was made of polyurethane material, which is very durable.
- Simplified Design: We minimized moving parts in the recovery system. The trommel uses a Tire-drive system instead of chain drives, reducing maintenance points by 40%.
- Easy Access: All maintenance points are easily accessible, with walkways and platforms designed according to international safety standards.
Q3: How does the plant effectively capture both fine (0-6mm) and coarse (6-12mm) gold nuggets simultaneously? Was this a technical challenge?
A: Capturing multiple gold size ranges in one operation requires careful system integration. We implemented a staged recovery approach:
- Primer solusi: Install a grid bar (75mm gap ) in the vibrating feeder so the big waste stone can be removed before feeding to the trommel scrubber. And we make the trommel scrubber drum one meter longer than the standard one.
- Secondary solution: Instead of installing the screen with the trommel scrubber, we equip it with 2 separate high-frequency vibration screens. The first set of screen mesh is 6mm. 0-6mm material will be washed again in the screen and pass through it, then flow to the 4 sets of gold sluice boxes. And then the second set of screen mesh is 12mm. The 6-12mm gold will pass through it. The 6-12mm gold nugget can be captured by the 5th gold sluice box.
- Pengelolaan Air: A closed-circuit water recycling system ensures consistent water pressure and flow, critical for both size fractions.
The system achieves an estimated 92% recovery rate for coarse gold and 88% for fine gold, significantly higher than typical regional averages.
In fact, we have already sold five processing lines with the same configuration, all of which have received consistent praise from our clients.
This Mali project exemplifies how tailored engineering can transform complex mining challenges into reliable, high-yielding operations. Though delayed by external setbacks, the plant’s design—rooted in adaptability and low-maintenance efficiency—remains a blueprint for alluvial gold recovery in demanding environments. As we reflect on this collaboration, we’re reminded that the best investments balance ambition with pragmatism, ensuring technology serves not just immediate needs but long-term sustainability. To all partners navigating similar ventures: we stand ready to collaborate, innovate, and turn constraints into triumphs.
