Slag Sorting Equipment And Processing

Published time:27 December 2024

Slag is a kind of solid waste produced in the industrial production process of metallurgy, power, and chemical industry. It is generated along with the metal or alloy in the smelting process. There are many types of slag because of its complex composition.

During steelmaking, coke, and iron ore begin a chemical reaction in the blast furnace.

When a large amount of heat is generated, the coke burns while the iron in the iron ore is converted to liquid form, eventually forming molten steel. During this process, slag is created and expelled from the furnace. Similarly, slag is produced in the production of metals such as aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc.

Composition of Slag

The composition of slag depends on factors such as the type of furnace that produces it and the production process. Slag consists mainly of oxides (e.g., silica, alumina, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide) with small amounts of sulfides and metals. Among these, iron oxides have a high content, which can reach more than 30% of the total mass of the slag. Slag may also contain small amounts of metallic and non-metallic elements, including calcium, magnesium, aluminum, potassium, sodium, and sulfur. In the metallurgical process, slag removes harmful impurities in molten steel, such as sulfur, phosphorus, and gases, through physicochemical reactions, and plays a refining role. According to the different metallurgical processes, slag can be divided into smelting slag and refining slag. In addition, slag can also be divided into alkaline slag, acidic slag, and neutral slag according to its nature.

The Comprehensive Utilization of Slag

Comprehensive utilization of slag is an important means to achieve a circular economy. In addition to the utilization of metal and non-metal components mentioned above, slag can also be used in the following areas:

  • Used as fertilizer: Slag contains a certain amount of trace elements and minerals. After appropriate treatment, slag can be used as organic fertilizer to promote plant growth.
  • Land backfill: After the harmless treatment of slag, it can be used for land backfill materials, increasing the value of land use.
  • Production of environmentally friendly building materials: Slag can be mixed with other materials to produce environmentally friendly building materials, such as slag bricks, slag concrete, and so on.

Slag Sorting

The treatment and recycling of slag are important links in industrial production. slag sorting equipment is the key equipment in this process, and its efficient and accurate sorting ability is of great significance in improving resource utilization and reducing environmental pollution. Below, we will introduce the steps for separating slag equipment in detail.

1. Raw material preparation and pretreatment

After the slag is collected from the production line, it is transported to the separating area through special conveying equipment. Before formal separating, the slag needs to be pre-treated, including cooling, crushing, screening, and other steps to ensure that the slag’s particle size meets the separating equipment’s requirements. This link helps to improve separating efficiency and reduce equipment wear.

2. Equipment startup and commissioning

After confirming that the slag is ready, start the slag sorting equipment. Before starting the equipment, the necessary debugging work, including checking whether the equipment components are intact, adjusting the sorting parameters, and so on. After the debugging is completed, the equipment enters the standby state, waiting for the input of slag.

3. Slag sorting process

Feeding

The pre-treated slag is uniformly fed into the separating equipment through the feeder. To ensure the separation effect, the feeding speed should be adjusted according to the equipment’s processing capacity.

Separation

After the slag enters the sorting equipment, it will be subjected to a variety of forces (such as gravity, magnetism, airflow, etc.) inside the equipment, so as to realize the effective separation of different components. In the process of separating, the equipment will automatically adjust the sorting conditions according to the preset parameters and the characteristics of the slag, in order to achieve the popular separating effect.

  • Physical separation: Magnetic separation and gravity separation are used to separate metal and non-metal components by utilizing the responsiveness of metal to the magnetic field and the difference in material density. Magnetic separation can separate iron, nickel, and other magnetic metals, while re-election separates heavy and light components according to the density difference.
  • Chemical separation: For the components that can not be completely separated by physical methods, chemical methods can be used, using chemical reagents to react with specific components to generate soluble or insoluble substances, thus realizing the separation.

Collection and Classification

After separating is completed, slags of different compositions will be collected separately. Usually, the equipment will be equipped with multiple outlets so that different types of slag can be discharged separately. The collected slag can be further treated or recycled according to its nature.

Treatment of materials after separation

  • Treatment of metal components: After separation, the metal components can be refined or smelted to extract valuable metals such as iron, copper, zinc, etc., which can be used to produce various metal products.
  • Processing of non-metallic components: Non-metallic components such as silicate, alumina, etc., can be used as building materials or filler raw materials for the manufacture of bricks and tiles, cement, ceramics, and other products.

4. Equipment maintenance and maintenance

Sorting slag equipment in the long-term use of the process, it is inevitable that there will be wear and tear or failure. Regular maintenance and repair of equipment is crucial. This includes checking the wear and tear of various parts of the equipment, replacing damaged parts, and cleaning up the dust inside the equipment. Through effective maintenance and repair, the service life of the equipment can be extended and the sorting efficiency can be improved.

5. Environmental protection and safety measures

In the process of sorting slag, attention should be paid to environmental protection and safety. Equipment should be equipped with effective dust removal devices to reduce dust pollution; operators should comply with safety regulations, and wear the necessary protective equipment to ensure personal safety.

The process steps of slag sorting equipment include raw material preparation and pretreatment, equipment startup and commissioning, slag sorting process, equipment maintenance and repair, and environmental protection and safety measures. By strictly following these steps, we can ensure the efficient and stable operation of the slag sorting equipment and contribute to the sustainable development of industrial production.
