Gold mining dredge, also known as gold dredge, gold mining ship, or gold dredging equipment, is a specialized piece of equipment designed for extracting gold from riverbeds, sandbars, and other water sources. The gold dredge is a kind of deformed product of a sand dredger, which separates placer gold from sand by adding mineral processing equipment to the sand dredger. Dredges operate by sucking up sediments from the waterbed using a vacuum system, then processing these sediments to separate gold from other materials. They are widely used in placer mining operations.
Types of Gold Mining Dredge
- Chain Bucket Dredge: It is a larger, industrial machines that use a series of buckets to excavate material from the riverbed, often used in large-scale mining operations. It is suitable for the extraction and recovery of sand and gold in the river channel where the content of drifted stones (big stones above 30cm) is low. They can be divided into advanced technology centrifuge gold panning dredge, drum chute gold dredge, and fixed chute gold dredge.
- Suction Gold Mining Dredge: A type of hobby mining that uses a motorized vacuum to suck up the bottom of rivers and streams. It is suitable for the extraction and recovery of sand and gold in rivers with a high content of driftstone and camphor wood. However, its disadvantage is that the sand ore makes it difficult to pump up the gold in the lower part of the stones after the stones are piled up during the pumping process.
- Small Gold Dredge Boat: A portable gold mining equipment that is used for gold mining in mini river channels. Typically 1-5 inches in diameter for the suction hose. It is lightweight, easy to assemble, and easy to transport. It’s used by hobbyists and small-scale miners.
- Cutter-suction Dredges: Equipped with a rotating cutter to break up harder sediments before suction.

【Gold Mining Dredge Structure】
Gold dredge is a kind of water-based joint plant integrating mining operation and ore dressing operation, which mainly includes the following systems:
- Excavation system: for extracting ore from river sand.
- Beneficiation system: This system washes the extracted ore and separates the gold sand. The equipment generally includes a cylindrical screen, a gold processing combined spiral chute, roughing equipment, etc., which completes the operation of washing, screening, and roughing the ore.
- Water supply system: It consists of water pumps, sand pumps, water pipes, etc., and provides the water required in the washing process.
- Waste Ore and Tailings Discharge System: consists of belt conveyors, sand pumps, etc., to handle waste ore and tailings.
- Deck Machinery: used to operate and maintain the equipment.
- Hull: to support the whole equipment.
- Power system: consists of diesel generator sets, power distribution cabinets, control consoles, etc., which provide the energy required for the operation of the equipment.
【Gold Dredge Working Principle】
- Large dredges: Large dredges use a rotating cylinder with holes to separate undersized material from oversize material. The undersized material falls into a sluice box, where it can be further sorted.
- Suction dredging: A suction dredge works like an underwater vacuum cleaner, using a gas-powered pump and suction hose to suck up material from the bottom of a streambed. The material is then passed into a floating sluice for filtering and recovering the gold.
