Nickel Ore

Nickel is a chemical element with the symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Nickel is an indispensable metal element in the world. It is an essential raw material in military manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, atomic energy, ultrasonic, and communication.

The main minerals of nickel ore are pentlandite, silicon magnesium nickel ore, goethite or yellow nickel ore, red nickel ore, and so on. The nickel reserves in the manganese nodules on the seabed are very large, which is an important prospect resource of nickel.

Nickel Ore Beneficiation

There are many types of nickel ore, mainly divided into copper-nickel sulfide ore and copper-nickel oxide ore according to the mineral properties. Among them, copper is the main impurity mineral in nickel ore, followed by lead, zinc, arsenic, fluorine, manganese, antimony, bismuth, chromium, etc. In the beneficiation process, copper-nickel sulfide ore and nickel oxide ore beneficiation are also the primary beneficiations.

Copper-nickel Sulfide Ore Beneficiation

Copper-nickel sulfide ore beneficiation method is mainly flotation, and magnetic separation and gravity separation are usually auxiliary beneficiation methods. Collectors and foaming agents for the flotation of copper sulfide minerals are often used in the flotation of copper-nickel sulfide ores.


1. Direct (or Partial) Priority Flotation

It is to select copper ore into a separate concentrate, primarily used in high copper content. The main feature of this method is that it can directly obtain copper concentrate with low nickel content.

2. Mixed Flotation

The mix flotation process is suitable for separating the ore that is a copper grade lower than nickel. The concentrate with copper and nickel will be smelted into high-grade nickel matte.

3. Mixed–priority Flotation

Mix-flotation the copper-nickel from the ore, then separate the low-grade nickel and low-grade copper concentrate from the mix concentration. The nickel concentrate after smelting obtains the high-grade nickel matte, then use floatation to separate the high-grade nickel matte.

4. Mixed-priority Flotation & Tailings Recovery

After flotation, recover the nickel minerals that are less floatable in the tailings when the variety of nickel minerals are more floatable in the ore.

Nickel Oxide Ore Beneficiation

Nickel oxide deposits are relatively shallow, ideal for large-scale open-pit mining, and can be selectively mined. After mining, nickel oxide is smelted and enriched, mainly by pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy.
